Following on from my review of the first part for The Most Beautiful Moment In Life, here is a quick a review for part 2. How did BTS fair this time?
INTRO: Never Mind Suga once again opens this album with a fierce monologue, expressing his youthful determination, telling the haters he's doing okay. He's following his beliefs, learning his mistakes as he goes along his journey as a young person / idol (this may be notable with the roaring crowd at the beginning of the track).
Run The title track to this mini album. Run is about a crazy, stupid kind of love that makes you feel like you can't live without them. "Young love" that might be deemed silly perhaps. Run run run again, even if I fall down, it’s alright. Run run run again, even if I get a little hurt, it’s alright. Even if I can’t have you, I’m ok. The fool-like destiny curses me. This is a pop rock track that reminds me a lot of B.A.P's 1004 (Angel) that has guitar riffs and particular fast beats that hype your emotions strongly.
Butterfly An ethereal song. Originally heard from the Prologue video but has been revamped slightly for this mini album. What stands out to me about this song is how it takes you to another world with its delicate feeling, largely in thanks to all of Vocal Line. This is another song that speaks of worry for losing somebody, comparing it to a butterfly who could easily fly away.
Whalien S2 A song that discusses the loneliness of a whale and how its feelings are hidden beneath the sea. This is a touching track that appropriately follows the stunning experience of Butterfly.
Ma City A track full of pride yet has a ton of funky beat to it. Definitely can see this playing in a jazz cafe or an intimate concert venue, psyching the audience up. As the song title may suggest, BTS talk about their cities and that no matter where they live, they'll still prefer their hometown no matter what and that their cities are always buzzing with such life. Crow Tit / Try Hard Coming from the phrase If a crow-tit walks like a stork, it will tear its legs which indicates when a crow-tit tries to copy a stork by spreading its legs. It's a warning that if you copy someone better than you then you'll ruin yourself. "Baebsae" talks about the young generation and how much they are blamed for many things and perhaps being too 'try-hard' for their own good.
SKIT: One Night In A Strange City Everyone is talking about the group's latest songs and calling out RapMonster for his lateness. It's always interesting to hear how they discuss things together and it shows the bond they share with one another. Jin suggests a flashback to the time they were preparing some of the songs which everyone states do feel like dreams. Full translation can be found here
Dead Leaves Discussing how an empty love is starting to surface and begging for some life to remain. Everything withers like the change of season, dead leaves falling like tears.
Outro: House Of Cards A haunting, sensual track to conclude HYYH part 2. A lot of listeners have said this has a slight Fifty Shades of Grey vibe or a general erotic fiction twist and I could see where they were coming from. This is a song about a dangerous love that has a clear ending. A house made of cards, and us, inside Even though the end is visible, even if it’s going to collapse soon. A house made of cards, we’re like idiots. Even if it’s a vain dream, stay like this a little more
OVERALL:
Bangtan Sonyeondan have managed to impress once again with this release. There is plenty to absorb in this mini album and pushing certain boundaries to make the listener feel a certain way. There's egotism, aggression, deep meaningful longing for love, concern for fading love and concealed feeling of loneliness. Butterfly is mindblowing and is one of two stand out tracks to me alongside House Of Cards. The latter is something I must salute Vocal Line for surprising me with such a song. There is no doubt they have improved in their vocal skills. Do you want to run with your love? Do you want to brag about your city? Do you want to feel sensual? HYYH pt 2 gives this all to you.
