[DVD REVIEW] We Are X (2017)

I bought a copy of the We Are X DVD as it comes with extra features such as deleted scenes and extra interviews that weren't shown in the original viewing (my review can be read here ICYMI).

Some of the features aren't new and fans may have seen them already on official Youtube channels e.g. the fan video of Born To Be Free. That was also shown in the cinema viewing of We Are X. There are also two performances from the classic Last Live concert of Forever Love and Kurenai**

The deleted scenes focuses on Yoshiki pursuing other side projects such as promoting Yoshikitty or Yoshikimono (I thought it was nice to see how Yoshikitty was created by the designer Yamaguchi Yuko). There was also mention of an X Museum and another member of the original X lineup - Yuuji who died shortly after hide a few months later. Now that is something I didn't know about to be honest.

To me, the big bonus on the DVD were the interviews with the band. Extended Q & A sessions which should have been kept in the official cut of the documentary. Anyone who starts moaning that it is a Yoshiki-centric documentary and nothing more can stop their complaining and watch these interviews as well. These interviews ask the usual questions of what the members' childhood was like, their musical influences, how they met Yoshiki, how they felt about bringing X Japan abroad etc.

So is it worth the purchase? For the extra features I would say yes.

Just a side note - for those new to X Japan, I would say The Last Live is absolutely worth a watch. I've only watched it three times from start to finish in my life because the emotions are incredibly strong (what that DVD didn't show were the final moments of the concert finishing and X Japan performing The Last Song). It was undoubtedly an amazing concert. Mind-blowing and theatrical.
