[DRAMA REVIEW] Colour Rush (2020/2021)

Colour Rush is a web drama series based on a BL novel, starring Yoo Jun and Hwall/Hur Hyunjun.

Small spoilers lurking here...

Choi Yeon Woo (Yoo Jun) is a "mono", unable to see colour in the world. He has been living with his Aunt Yoo Yi Rang who is currently investigating the disappearance of Yeon Woo's mother and also happens to be a mono.  Being colour blind all his life has also meant having struggles at school and after transferring to a new environment, this time an all boys school, he meets Kpop idol trainee Go Yoo Han (Hwall).

Life changes when he reacts strongly to Yoo Han and experiences a colour rush that's strong enough to make him faint.  It soon turns out that Yeon Woo has met his Probe, the one person who can make a mono see colour when they are close by.  Yoo Han is smitten by Yeon Woo, calling him pretty and assuming he was a Kpop idol trainee like himself because of his good looks.  Who can blame him?

Throughout the series, Yeon Woo is trying to fight his conflicted feelings towards Yoo Han between finding him annoying, charming and genuinely handsome.  He also does not want to fall into the trap of being an obsessive mono who kidnaps a probe so they can't escape, which has been widely reported on the news.  Moments where the decolouring kicks in brings out the frustration and desperation of Yeon Woo to not lose sight of the colours around him.  However as well as teasing his new friend, Yoo Han wants to teach him colours during Yeon Woo's colour rush.

The interaction between the main couple is sometimes cute and touching as each episode moves forward but there are moments where there is intensity and it might be seen as cliche in a story.  I even worried that Yeon Woo was going to really keep Yoo Han as a hostage in his moment of madness after buying all those things from the homeware store.  Instead we realise he attempted suicide in his own room to keep Yoo Han safe since he cares for him that much.  Obviously that did not work out and Yeon Woo instead lands in a hospital to recover.

With all the to and fro'ing between the main couple, and them running away to see the beach, the sudden reveal of Yoo Han's facial blindness aka Prosopagnosia took me a little off guard.  Beneath the dominating, teasing confident facade, Yoo Han says he has trouble remembering particular features of a person's face, including his own school friend Jung Joo Haeng.  Yet he knows when Yeon Woo is nearby and can pick his face out so easily.  Well, there is your destined lover storyline methinks.

Given this is a web drama, the pacing of the story is fast and you can't expect too much closure.  However the mystery behind Yeon Woo's mother should have been touched on a bit more since it was only mentioned a few times by the characters.  We have to use our imagination after that little mid-credit scene (or was that only shown in the film version?).

If I were to point out some good points about this web drama, it's the chemistry between Yeon Woo and Yoo Han but also the supporting roles of Jung Joo Haeng and Kim Min Jae.  Both these school peers can see the obvious coupling building up the minute they started interacting with each other.  It's quite hilarious.  Hur Hyunjun wearing a mask for most of the series was probably a good thing since I'd probably have a colour rush lose myself looking at his face and/or his eyes.   Yoo Jun's narrating to express Yeon Woo's thoughts about Yoo Han are effective.  I also like the emphasis of dissecting different colour sides.  I mean kudos to Yoo Han for even taking the time to do a lot of research and studying.

I enjoy the music playing in the background each time Yeon Woo has a colour rush.  That particular instrumental is addictive and I'm tempted to put it as a ringtone on my phone at some point.  The two songs on the OST are also very fitting to the drama as well.  Colour Rush by Ryu Sujeong and Finding You by Kwon Soon Il.  Definitely recommend listening to those songs.  There are official MVs available on Youtube but it may give away quite a large chunk of the web drama.
