[MUSIC + FILM ROUNDUP] WayV, YoungK and Parasite

Finally watched the very hyped Parasite and slowly but surely treading into the territory of WayV. Also enjoying DAY6's Young K with his soothing vocals.

DAY6 YoungK

Young K continues to bless MyDay with his covers and he dives into a little acoustic jazz through Fly Me To The Moon. I enjoy his Coldplay cover of Viva La Vida which he filmed in London when DAY6 last visited. I know it's been done to death and a popular choice of song to cover amongst many artists.

Parasite (2019)

I'm normally sceptical when a Western audience/journalist/editor etc hypes something from Asia because their taste would certainly not be on the same pathway as me. Speaking from past experience and trying not to fall into the same trap again going forward. However I'm going to say that the West got something right and I will admit that the wins Parasite earned at this year's Oscars was well-deserved. Not just to tackle the lack of diversity in awards ceremonies but because I actually think the film was somewhat enjoyable. It's a rarity when an Asian picture even wins the big awards, let alone get nominated and the shady racism from people is petty, as well as the anti-subtitling brigade. I always need subtitles even if the language is in English. When there are different dialects going on, you can bet I will need the subtitles.

Bong Joon Ho's Parasite is a dark comedy about class discrimination and social inequality in Korea. The rich family in this film are the Parks and the poor are the Kims. The latter live in a basement flat and have struggled to find permanent work, grabbing any temporary low-paid jobs to keep the income rolling in (sounds like me). The son Kim Kiwoo (Choi Woo Shik) catches up with his friend Minhyuk (Park Seo Joon in a cameo) after he visits the Kims to deliver a scholar's rock that is meant to promise wealth. Minhyuk asks Kiwoo to take over his English tutor job for the Parks' daughter Dahye while he goes to study abroad. Kiwoo obviously refuses since he has no qualifications or any academic background but Minhyuk says to fake it and that he would send the Parks a recommendation.

Upon visiting the Park household and becoming acquainted with the family by masterfully deceiving them with his intelligence, skills and accomplishments, Kiwoo encourages his sister Kijung to act as an Art Therapist for Dahye's younger brother Dasong. Eventually the entire family are recommended by one another and hide their related blood as they slowly become servants for the Parks. They of course are found out later on and all hell breaks lose bit by bit, revealing other secrets lurking in the Park household (I'm still quite amazed by the discovery of such things in the film. I won't spoil it).

Parasite is very well-executed with the symbolism on class differences. The famed Ram Don has certainly wet many appetites and a lot of Youtube channels are posting their recipes since Parasite came about. I am honestly more familar with the Chapaguri name when I randomly lurk on various pages, as opposed to Ram Don and have eaten both Neoguri udon and Chapagetti separately. Here's one quick recipe on how to make Chapaguri from DKDKTV's David Kim. I think given my lack of culinary skills, I'd make this dish in the same way.

The cast are fantastic and the soundtrack very fitting. It's amazing to see familiar faces from previous works and there were instances where I recognised their faces but couldn't remember where from until further research and shocked to find out I had seen them before in another film or kdrama. The faking by the Kim family is almost a big reminder on how I analyse other people (mostly from Asia who migrate here to be honest). Are they really rich and clever or are they faking it? Are they just a sad stereotype of being a snake who deceives to get what they want from the West? Then again there are Westerners who are just as cunning but nobody really calls them out for it.

WayV further promotions for Awaken The World

WayV keep on feeding the WayZenNi with more videos and it's going to kill them. Eye contact fancams are always a dangerous joy to the fangirl and fanboy watching these stage performances. I hope they get more recognition over time.
