[MUSIC ROUNDUP] BTS + NCT127

BTS give the ARMYs a lot of goodies this past month with releases of new songs to celebrate Map Of The Soul: 7 and NCT 127 kick it hard with their latest song.

The Black Swan MV is without a doubt a visual delight. Focus on the dancing with plenty of gorgeous close ups which provide a pleasant reminder of the Blood, Sweat And Tears comeback. Jimin just shines in his solo. The contemporary dancer unleashes here and does not hold back.

The previous week, BigHit released two videos for ON. There was the performance video with a diverse group of dancers [yes if you look carefully there are a few different ethnicities] filmed in America and then there is the official MV which has a storyline. Both ON and Black Swan are growers, though I've noticed this seems to be the case with most of Bangtan's latest releases. Perhaps it is a way to try to appeal to the Western audience and the style they go for may not be my cup of tea. I prefer Black Swan just a little bit more but this and ON definitely have great choreography and catchy parts in the songs.

Map Of The Soul: 7 has some songs from the Persona album along with a larger tracklist of newer songs including the title tracks. I'm surprised I even saw a rather positive review of this in the Metro newspaper one morning when I was on the train to work. The album certainly feels varied in terms of style (with all the members contributing with lyrics or producing) and there are collaborations with Western artists. Louder Than Bombs was produced by Troye Sivan and it certainly has that eerie, out of world feel in the music and we know Jungkook is a big Troye fanboy. Taehyung's Inner Child is uplifting and takes you to another world and a perfect way to escapism. The album does give us a journey into Bangtan's music career. They grow more popular by the minute and it seems Map Of The Soul: 7 is giving us that story. Bulletproof The Eternal is a perfect example.

So with NCT 127's Kick It...I was not expecting that kind of noise since Cherry Bomb. Like many Kpop songs, when there is an earworm it is an earworm and it won't go away (new thangs, new thangs anyone?!). I was a bit ?? over the Bruce Lee / Hong Kong cinema / Kung-fu homage and after getting over the little cringe I was somewhat appreciating the dedication and nod to a rather legendary figure. The nose flicks that Lee Siu Lung often did when he was about to fight was also included in the choreography. Game Of Death bike suit I see you.
