[ALBUM REVIEW] The Connect: Deja Vu - MONSTA X

After that epic Connect D clip, what will the new album be like? Here's a review.

Jealousy: Title song for this comeback. As you can see the MV is very much focusing on the choreography with little storyline (no link to the rather stylish clip Starship shared previously). However if this isn't an issue and you can enjoy the dancing and song itself you're good to go. Jealousy seems to be a song directed at the Monbebe where MX are wondering why the fans' faves are not themselves and perhaps the other member. The line 'why do you keep looking at Shownu' by Wonho gave me a chuckle to be honest. Jealousy is a grower after a few listens and it will definitely light up the stage.

Destroyer: One of the more in your face/brutal MX tracks. You'll notice this during the chorus that the song just grabs you each time Jooheon and Wonho say 'Destroyer'. There is a connection between two people and they are tied by the threads of fate, their souls intertwined. The urge to randomly guitar smash during that moment lurks now and then (for me). I have to confess, the guitar sections in Destroyer somehow remind me a little of Keane's The Iron Sea.

Fallin': This is so going to the club. You just know people are going to dance to this so hard. The falling is referring to the rain/water pouring down on everyone. A pity Hyungwon got almost no lines except when singing alongside Jooheon. I almost felt the groove at the beginning and then boom there was that beat change which caught me off guard.

Crazy In Love: Another song performed on stage during the comeback, although in shortened format. It's one of the sweeter tracks on this mini album. Song title is self-explanatory about two people crazily in love with each other.

Lost In The Dream: They say they get lost in the dream...how do you think we feel? In the middle of the night, you're missing your SO and you hope it's all a dream and they'll come back to you. MX you seem to be shaking my heart on this album more than the previous works...I get goosebumps listening to this song.

If Only: The beat at the beginning of this song reminds me of White Heart but the lyrics are entirely different and more on the lines of anticipating a break up. Not wanting to lose the closeness between the two and not wanting tomorrow to come because it will be over...or maybe it won't be over and they'll still look at each other when they meet. I must say, even the line distribution is balanced in this song. Thank you for the touching song and line distribution, Wonho.

Special: A hype song to end the mini album and it's like a follow-up to Now Or Ever from The Code album. Come through and steal the show, guys - that's the kind of feeling I get from listening to Special. Would you like to party with MX with this song, even though you are not the partying type? Just imagine it. You're going to wave your arms in unison when this is performed at the concert surely.

Overall

I enjoyed the vocals and rapping in this album once again - minus the odd sound distortions in some of the tracks. Hyungwon didn't get as many solo lines in a lot of the tracks although thankfully with the likes of Jealousy, Destroyer and If Only he has more than one sentence. Kihyun proves why he's the power vocalist in the group but this doesn't take away Hyungwon, Wonho, Minhyuk and even Shownu's great voices. Everyone gets a turn at some point. There's a mix of different genres to feed your taste, depending by how you feel. I do sense The Connect: Deja Vu had some emotional impact on me which I haven't felt in a long while from rock or metal (thanks Destroyer) but then there are also slower pop tracks that show off the strength of the Vocal Line and ferocity of Rapper Line so I can get some satisfaction in different ways while listening to this album.
