[ALBUM REVIEW] The Code - MONSTA X

After completing The Clan trilogy, MONSTA X return with a new mini album which may present a slightly different sound in their music overall.

Dramarama: Wow at the MV with the visuals and time travelling storyline and wow at the song itself...the lyrics are a little sultry after some dissecting. The dream lover is like a drama, compelling, seductive with a strong pull. There is a beginning, middle and end/climax. Is there a way of moderately wanting them? That's what MONSTA X ask. I love the opening of this title song. Truly funky.

Now Or Never Quite the party track. Just do what your heart tells you, do what you want. Now or never. Don't mind what others think or what they tell you to do...well this sounds like my kind of anthem perhaps.

In Time: With a repeated melody from a music box to open the song, In Time slows it down on this album. It's about waiting for a long period for the special person to come back to you 'in time' for months, for days. In time, time will stop so that I can see the beautiful light

From Zero: The Hyungwon/Wonho aka Hyungwonho duet that was shown on the Beautiful Tour to many lucky Monbebe across the world. This version however features all the members. Everyone gets a turn and it still sounds just as nice. The song is about rekindling a past relationship and starting all over again from scratch/from zero.

X: So X means these guys are a dangerous and mysterious world. Adding the guys plus yourself will mean XXX (or X x X). Double the danger, double the seductive feelings for each other. Ignoring the autotune for Rapper Line, I enjoy this funky track. It really is a nod to the fans or anyone who begins to fall into the MONSTA X land Everyone calls me X, that guy is dangerous applicable to many favourite groups

Tropical Night: The guys sing about sweating from working hard to achieve their dreams and how they are the tropical night as they hit the stage. The world is looking at them only. Another song dedicated to the fans, guys...?

Deja Vu: The intro of this song reminds me of MX's speedier tracks which makes the listener brace for a speedy power dance track. Deja Vu isn't quick and on your feet like how Trespassing and All In are but there is a catchiness. As the song title suggests, the guys experience deja vu or a situation that is familiar to certain memories of facing someone from the past.

Overall

I'm hoping the original From Zero recording will be officially released in the future to add to the other sub-units in the group. It would be a waste if this doesn't happen as it was well-received among Monbebe. Another thing I liked with The Code was the fact Hyungwon managed to get more lines in Dramarama and a few other tracks which is a bonus. Even his whisper in Deja Vu caught me by surprise. MONSTA X are exploring a newer sound in this mini album and it's rather intriguing (Dramarama is right up my alley with the rock sound - any pop tracks with a lot of guitar beats will get my approval in general).
