[FILM REVIEW] Scarlet Innocence (2014)

Scarlet Innocence is a 2014 Korean romance thriller loosely based on the Pansori Simcheongga.

Literature professor Shim Hakkyu (Jung Woo Sung) temporarily moves into a small town to get away from a case involving sexual harassment. Hoping to perhaps write a novel during his time away from his current job he then meets Deokee (Esom) , a young ticket sales assistant who works in an amusement park.

A small glimpse of one another outside a mini market in the first five minutes of the film soon leads them both to a turbulent journey of lust and passion. The sexual encounters the couple embark on soon leads to gossip in the small town, much to the dismay of Deokee's deaf mother. Hakkyu tries to end their relationship and return back to his depressed wife and young daughter Chungee once he finds out he is cleared of the harassment charges. However Deokee has trouble taking in the sudden news and wonders why Hakkyu did not mention about the affair to his family. After Hakkyu tries to bribe Deokee into never speaking about their affair again, tragedy strikes for Deokee during their argument and also pays a visit to Hakkyu when he receives a distressing call from Chungee.

Eight years pass and Hakkyu has become a bestselling author who gambles a great deal in an underground casino while indulging in a wild lifestyle with smoking, drinking and plenty of sex. This all eventually leads to him becoming blind. An older Chungee has become distant from her father and she meets new neighbour Sejung, a kind older woman who is actually Esom in disguise and as been planning revenge on Hakkyu over the years. Of course from the way the some of the other characters interact with Esom, the viewer can easily tell who is working with her in this plot but the long term revenge plan that Esom had been organising somehow takes one hell of a twist through the film once she identifies herself to Hakkyu. Without giving too much away, it would be best to watch the film yourself to see what I am referring to exactly.

Scarlet Innocence is a fairytale that has been given a modern twist and made more complex than a simple line of lovey dovey-ness. Jung Woo Sung and Esom undoubtedly bring the eroticism and passion to the screen and in interviews promoting Scarlet Innocence, they often mention that they had to discuss with specific family members on the sex scenes. This is a film that demonstrates what lengths we go to for revenge and to cure heartbreak as we grow older. Love, lust and revenge - put them together and it's a deadly combo.
