[FILM REVIEW] Beat (1997)

Finally sat down to watch an early film of Jung Woo Sung and what possibly catapulted his acting career right away.

From Wiki:-

Three friends in Korea all drop out of high school. Min is a feared brawler whose widowed mother is a drunk. The story traces his journey from high school to the underworld as his best friend introduces him to life in the mob. Complicating Min's life further is his love for the volatile Romy, a girl from an upper-class family with dreams of going to a prestigious college.

I think this perfectly summarises the film's story and it is incredibly hard to go into a deep review. Beat is a youth / coming of age film shows character development throughout the character's journey of growing up, trying to get by with what they have or at least achieving whatever is possible through any means. There's violence, blood, anger against adults, clashes with each other.

You truly feel the raw emotion in the characters. The cast make it work so well and Jung Woo Sung's narration as his character Min gives you insight to a young delinquent's POV. What also makes Beat quite a treat to watch is the soundtrack. Korean rock and metal - it works alongside the aggressive scenes where the characters are utterly furious and let off plenty of steam.

Beat is definitely worth a watch if anyone is curious as to why Jung Woo Sung is highly sought after by many directors.
